Jian Ware

Jian Ware / Jian Zhan 

Jian Zhan (Jian Ware) is a legendary style of traditional Chinese dark-glazed porcelain originating from Jianyang, Fujian Province. Renowned since the Song Dynasty (960–1279), it was officially selected as teaware for the Imperial Court and remains the quintessential cup for traditional Chinese tea ceremonies.

Key Characteristics

• Origin & History : Crafted in the ancient Jian Kilns of Fujian. It reached its cultural peak during the Song Dynasty alongside the rise of tea-whisking (Dian Cha).

• Iron-Rich Clay & Glaze : Both the local clay body and glaze contain exceptionally high iron content (~8%), giving the cups a dense, heavy feel and superior heat retention.

• Natural Flame Effects : The iconic crystalline patterns are formed naturally inside the kiln at temperatures above 1300°C—meaning no two Jian Zhan cups are ever identical.

Famous Glaze Patterns 

• Tenmoku / Oil Spot : Distinct metallic spots resembling shimmering drops of oil floating on liquid.

• Hare’s Fur : Delicate, fine radial streaks reminiscent of soft animal fur stretching down the inner bowl.

• Partridge Feather : Speckled white or golden oval markings mimicking partridge chest feathers.

• Yohen / Iridescent : The rarest glaze, casting mesmerizing multicolored halos (blue, violet, teal) under light.
